Wearable Tech: Here to Stay, or Passing Fad?

Wearable technology has come a long way since the calculator watch. In the past whenever I thought of the term "wearable technology" the first things I would think of were always calculator watches and pedometers, but boy have things changed! Even if you're a skeptic, this blogger thinks that pretty much everyone will be using some type of wearable tech by 2020.

The Next Big Thing in...Fashion?
It seems like wearable technology is everywhere. Whether it is Google Glass, or the Samsung Galaxy Gear, there seems to be nothing that you can't tech out.  There is Colour Change Couture, fabric that changes color when wet, The Programmable T-shirt, which, when combined with the smartphone app, allows the wearer to display tweets, Facebook statuses, and pictures. Celebs are even getting on the wearable tech bandwagon; Nicole Scherzinger wore a dress made of silk, Swarovski crystals, and 2,000 LED lights that displayed tweets in real time when the hashtag #tweetthedress was used.  For more on the future of fashion, check out this slideshow (you really should, there's some pretty cool stuff in there).

Just the Facts Ma'am
Now I know you're probably thinking, "All this stuff is neat, but do people actually use this stuff that much in their daily lives?" Never fear gentle reader, I have the stats! The Centre for Creative and Social Technology at Goldsmiths, University of London conducted a study of 4,000 adults in the US and UK that lead to some interesting results. To start, it's important to know that only 18% of that initial 4,000 actually use wearable technology, but that 18% had some interesting opinions. For instance, 82% of wearable tech users in America and 71% in Britain felt that it enhanced their lives in some way. Shockingly (at least to me), 13% of the people surveyed say that they never remove the device and 7% admit to checking their device at least once every 5 minutes.  Your inner statistician still not satisfied? It's the Future
Stats aside, it is clear that wearable tech industry is taking off. It seems like every day I'm reading about some new use/app for Google Glass. For instance, there is now an app that teaches the wearer ASL (American Sign Language) by pushing quizzes to the wearer throughout the day or the doctor in Ohio that used Google Glass to livestream a knee operation to a group of medical students so that they could watch the procedure from their laptops. It's not just uses for Google Glass that seems to constantly evolving wristbands that work as a type of health tracker (i.e., Jawbone UPFitbit, etc.) have been dominating the tech world lately, and I'm sure that as I type this there are developers all over the globe creating the next big thing.

The wearable tech market is set to explode in the coming years. According to a CNET article, it's projected that by 2018 the total worldwide spending on wearable tech will reach $19 billion. The boom will open up new avenues for app developers, which is great news for us over at Amadeus Consulting.

From 2013, NTT Communications has been providing cPaaS service, SkyWay. Its customer’s expectations for leveraging WebRTC technology are not only typical real-time communication use cases such as Web conference, remote education, but also IoT use cases such as remote camera monitoring, smart-glass, and robotic. Because of this, NTT Communications has numerous IoT business use-cases that its customers are developing on top of PaaS. WebRTC will lead IoT businesses to be more innovative and address current issues in the Edge Computing scenario. The use cases of WebRTC are expanding - video chat, online education, online health care etc. Not only for human-to-human communication, but also IoT use cases such as machine to human use cases can be seen recently. One of the typical use-case is remote camera monitoring. With WebRTC, people can have interoperability and flexibility for deploying monitoring service. However, the benefit of WebRTC for IoT is not only its convenience and interoperability. It has lots of potential to address current issues around IoT - security, connectivity and so on - based on P2P technology. It will become a key-component especially in edge computing use cases, in his view.
WebRTC is great technology to build your own communication tools. It will be even more exciting experience it with advanced devices, such as a 360 Camera, 360 microphone, and a depth sensor camera. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Masashi Ganeko, a manager at INFOCOM Corporation, introduced two experimental projects from his team and what they learned from them. "Shotoku Tamago" uses the robot audition software HARK to track speakers in 360 video of a remote party. "Virtual Teleport" uses a multiple Intel RealSense Depth Camera to scan 3D and build 3D models in real-time, and display as hologram in front of remote participants.
